Budget Development & Communications 2013 - 2014

BUDGET QUICKLINKS

Process is Important

The process used for developing the proposed budget includes what I refer to as a “Budget Communications Cycle”, which systematically provides opportunities to engage in dialogue with all stakeholder groups during the budget development process.  This enables me to listen and learn from our educational community regarding the ways we can work together to develop a budget that preserves the outstanding programs that we offer here at Lansing within the realistic economic situation that currently exists.  I believe that through this process, we will be able to find many ways to reduce costs as far away from children and staff as possible by reviewing all areas of our expenditures and looking at everything before making final decisions.  This responsive and reflexive communication process will yield many opportunities to refine our thinking and decisions based on continuous feedback from all stakeholders.

The articulated communications process described in the Budget Communications Cycle is representative of the collaborative listening style of leadership and decision-making that I enjoy.  Not only does it provide built-in opportunities to strengthen the relationships within the community, I believe it yields the best results as well.  Designing a collaborative process that values the people in the system ultimately provides the best solutions that could not be possible with limited involvement.  In the past few budget years, I believe we have maintained a strong educational program for our children, and strengthened our system by improving the communication, relationships, and trust between all stakeholders in our educational community.  I am proud of those results and look forward to repeating them this budget season.
