Lansing offers the choice of French or Spanish beginning in the 7th grade. Students earn one high school credit at the end of 8thgrade when they pass the New York State Proficiency Exam in either language. Students may then continue their study of either language in the High School where levels 2 through 5 are taught. Lansing offers an honors program in both French and Spanish and Advanced Placement courses are offered in both languages. Students also have the possibility of studying both languages in High School.
The Lansing Foreign Language department emphasizes real-life language skills with the goal of motivating students to continue their study of other languages in college. Our department has seen many of its graduates go on to combine their skills as speakers of another language with many varied college majors and careers. The acquisition of a second or third language is not viewed as an end in itself, but rather as a tool to be used in our students' personal and professional lives.
