ESL is the abbreviation for English as a Second Language. ESOL stands for English to Speakers of Other Languages. Both of these acronyms can be used interchangeably.
ESL is a program where students learn to speak, read and write English from a certified ESL teacher, who may or may not speak the learner's native language. Students may receive one, two or three periods of instruction depending on the learner's grade level and proficiency in English. Students are taught completely in English.
