TheLansing School District English/Language Arts Department is dedicatedto instilling kindergarten through twelfth-grade students withlife–long skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Readingand ListeningFocuson comprehension, recognition of literary elements, makingpredictions, drawing conclusions, and synthesizing informationthrough texts read or presented orally is a major part of the K-12ELA curriculum. Students are asked to engage in a variety of genres,complete research projects, and make connections to real-lifesituations throughout each school year.

Writingand SpeakingInaddition, students are asked to engage in the writing process throughcreative and expository writing pieces that provide synthesis toliterature and make connections to their own lives. Development andelaboration, grammar and mechanics, voice and diction, and clarityand context are all stressed in their ELA classes. Informal andpublic speaking assignments such as speeches, presentations, andrecitations are also encouraged as a means of teaching expression andcommunication.
